UAE ranks 5th in IMD World Competitiveness 2026 — and 1st for economic performance
The UAE placed 5th in the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook 2026 and 1st globally for economic performance, leading its region for the tenth straight year — plus 9th in the CGGI good-government index. Why competitiveness rankings are about the durability of your asset.
The UAE took fifth place in the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook 2026 — one of the most authoritative annual comparisons of world economies, compiled by the Swiss business school IMD. On the economic performance measure the country ranks first in the world outright. The UAE has now led its region for the tenth consecutive year.
What the ranking measures
IMD scores countries across four blocks: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency and infrastructure. Fifth place overall means strength in all four at once — a result impossible to carry on an oil sector alone.
- 5th in the world overall in IMD 2026.
- 1st for economic performance — the block covering growth, trade, investment and employment.
- 10 straight years at the top of the region.
- In the same vein: 9th in the world in the CGGI 2026 good-government index — for strategy execution, business environment and strong institutions.
Why competitiveness rankings are not an abstraction
Behind the ranking's lines sits what a property owner feels in the wallet. Government efficiency is the speed of visas and permits, working courts, predictable rules. Business efficiency is companies opening offices and hiring the people who pay rent. Infrastructure is the roads, the airport and the metro whose stations anchor apartment prices.

Competitiveness is, at bottom, the answer to whether the country will keep attracting capital and people. For an asset held over a ten-year horizon, that question outweighs any quarter's price statistics.
Practical takeaways
- Watch the trajectory, not just the rank. The UAE is in the global top five after a decade of consistent climbing — a trend you can lean on, not a lucky year.
- First place for economic performance is the most concrete of the measures: money and projects genuinely turn over faster here than among competitors.
- Diversification, externally certified. High scores across all four blocks are independent evidence the economy is no longer an oil monoculture — the core durability argument for anyone holding property here.
