Light & Peace Museum: The Ideas Behind Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Most people arrive at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque captivated by its monumental architecture: white marble, enormous courtyards and elaborate floral ornamentation have made it one of the UAE's most recognisable landmarks. Beneath the complex, however, visitors can discover another side of its story through the Light & Peace Museum.

Rather than concentrating only on how the mosque was designed and constructed, the museum explores the values and ideas that inspired it. Its exhibition is organised into five thematic spaces, guiding visitors through tolerance, Islamic civilisation, cultural exchange and the wider meaning behind the mosque.

Heritage of the Islamic world

One section traces the UAE's relationship with the artistic, scientific and cultural achievements of the Islamic world. Historical manuscripts, pages of the Quran, textiles and scientific instruments are displayed alongside contemporary artworks and interactive installations, connecting centuries of history with the present.

Three holy mosques

Another gallery is dedicated to three of Islam's holiest mosques: Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca, Al-Masjid An-Nabawi in Medina and Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. Large-scale digital experiences allow visitors to examine their architecture and understand their religious and cultural significance.

An exchange of ideas

The exhibition also moves beyond religion itself, exploring the exchange of ideas between Islamic civilisation and cultures across Europe, Asia and Africa. Science, literature, craftsmanship and design demonstrate how knowledge and artistic traditions have travelled between societies over centuries.

Back to the mosque

The final sections return to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, explaining why it was conceived not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of openness. The museum connects the building's architecture with the broader values it was intended to represent.

Designed for families

The experience is designed for families as well as individual visitors. Interactive areas introduce children to Islamic geometry, architectural patterns and decorative traditions through hands-on activities rather than conventional museum displays.

Outlook

The Light & Peace Museum does not attempt to compete with the scale of the mosque above it. Instead, it adds context. After walking through the galleries, visitors return to the Grand Mosque with a clearer understanding of the history, culture and ideas behind its architecture.
